Case Study
The Science and Technology Training Centre decided to start a chicken farm to provide a sustainable income stream to support the school existing funds, to train students in animal breeding methods and to contribute to the students’ meals and diet. The Centre already had a chicken coop and funding was provided to buy the first batch of chickens, equipment and poultry vaccines.
Project Outcomes and Impacts
- The Centre made a 20% profit on the first batch of chickens. Lessons learnt on planning target weight and feed were applied to the next batches in order to increase the profit margin.
- All students are involved in the care of chickens and are learning about the various aspects of animal husbandry.
- The Centre was checking the possibility to start the egg production.
